Sonam Estiu is an intensive music creation program organized by the team at the Major82 Music School in Pòrtol. It brings together children and young people passionate about music who already have experience in musical practice and want to dedicate a few days in July to creating, composing, arranging, and performing in a large ensemble of over 30 musicians.
In one week, we compose, rehearse, perform, and record the music we have created. During the final concert on Friday, we make a recording that is later published.
Composition groups are organized by age, and in this edition, the teaching team chose not to provide any musical seed in the form of a melody, harmony, or rhythmic pattern, as had been done in previous intensives. In this case, it was agreed that the youngest group would compose based on a pedal note, the middle group would compose using a Pop-Rock structure, and the oldest group would be inspired by contrapuntal forms.
In Sonam Estiu 25, the creative seed was reflection on conflicts between peoples from different regions of the Earth. Each group, made up of 10 participants and led by two teachers, received a letter providing context based on the geographical location of the community. From there, each group created a collective composition expressing the emotions that these writings and reflections on the proposed theme inspired in the participants.
Each group received a letter written by Goran Levi from the Sea People, the Cyberpunk Dystopian City, and the Mountain Forest People.
The final piece of this Sonam Estiu 25 was composed by Teo Salvà. It is our response to conflict: open your ears, listen, be together, and make powerful music.
During the week, we dedicate time to “frog meetings”, our way of calling the moments when the group slows down, listens, and breathes together without making music. These sessions, mainly led by Gori Matas, give us the key to interpreting the music on Friday: trust in the group and in oneself.
In this edition, the teaching team stepped back from directing the Grand Ensemble. Section leaders and other group leaders were assigned to make decisions regarding cues, endings, dynamics, number of repetitions, etc. The trust they showed in their abilities and their respect for others was a valuable learning experience for everyone.
The result of this process is an album recorded and mixed by Jaume Blàzquez. It can be listened to on Spotify, while we continue to search for a platform more supportive of artists and the world.
